This involves editing the registry, so you'd better know what you are doing

Goto Start, Run, Type Regedit
go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Find the key called "DriveIcons" if you don't have one, create it

Create a new key for each drive letter
ie C for C:\ D for D:\ etc

Create a key in each drive key called "DefaultLabel" and change the value to whatever you need it to be,

It should look something like this if you did it right

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

-DriveIcons
-C
-DefaultLablel
-D
-DefaultLabel

etc. etc. etc.

If you need any help let me know

Am I missing something here?

In Disk Management you can right click on any drive, select properties, and change the drive label directly.

In fact, in "My Computer" you can right click the device, Properties, and give them a custom label.

What is the point in going to the registry?

you can't do that with a CD Drive though, I have 6 and i like to keep track of them by giving them different names when there is not a CD in

Bored1,

Thanks, for the life of me I could not figure out why a registry edit might be desired.

Thanks again.
