I am tryng to setup replication on a server but am getting an error because the server has been registered as (local); replication doesn't work with such names as '.' or '(local)'.

My problem is how do I rename the server since its on the same box? More clearly, the machine name is SRV1 but SQL Server is registered as '(local)'.

Although when I try to create the publication from another machine it fails with an 'Access denied' error.

Your help is highly appreciated.

OK. I deleted my own server's registration and I was able to re-register it with the same name, it comes up in the list. But, when the server is registered as local how do you change that name to the name of the PC? What are the possible consequences of such action?
