This is more or less a question of cosmetic in WinXP: Over time, the msconfig startup box is cluttered with many unchecked/disabled startup items. It seems that they stay in there forever. Is there anyway that we can clean up those unused boxes?

Yes, aside from removing the corresponding apps themselves (which is the best option), you can navigate in the registry to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Here, you should find most of those entries. You can also check under \RunOnce and \RunOnceEx if they exist. ~cdogg

The other way is through the registry.

Once you have unticked them in MSCONFIG they are moved here-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfigstartupfolder
& in startupreg

delete the keys you don't want.

Remember to back up.

Ash.

Thanks for your quick responses! I do not want to get rid of those offenders, just to get those unchecked boxes off the startup tab. I've followed AshleyPride's method and it works great.

Thanks, Ashley! I spent *half a day* searching for WHERE the unchecked MSCONFIG programs are kept. Now I can stop and feed my dog :)

Hello there. I was also looking for a way to clear my unchecked entries in msconfig (WinXP-Pro). It doesn't really matter one way or another if they remain unchecked. But since I'm a diehard perfectionist, I had to dispose of them in a friendly way.

I found the "perfect" utility on the web called "RegVac". It's a shareware product. I've had the trial version for 34 days now, forget how many days left.

So, this utility has an accessory tab that removes any and all unchecked entries in msconfig. It also has functions to clean registry of invalid keys, etc. All I know is it worked for me. Try it...
