How to remove "LiveUpdate" from Control Panel?

Hi,

I have removed all the symantec products from my PC, but the "LiveUpdate" icon remains in the Control Panel.

I have tried searching the registry and there are no entries containing the word "LiveUpdate".

I have been to the symantec web site (after Google gave me a pointer) but even though the article title seemed spot on, it did not work because the registry key it mentioned does not exist in my system.

I was intending to "Search" Tek-Tips before posting this question but the "Search" facility is off-line for maintenance.

There are no Symantec products (and that includes LiveUpdate) in my "Add/Remove Programs" list.

How can I remove "LiveUpdate" from Control Panel?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Each program listed in Add/Remove Programs has a subkey listed here. Locate the correct subkey for the program in question and right click it, then select Delete. You may want to choose Export, first, to export the key to a REG file. The REG file can be re-imported if you find you made a mistake.

You may have to contact the manufacturer of the program that you want to remove if you need to clean up the disk and registry entries. The procedure described in this section does not remove all the files and registry entries used by the program; it removes only the reference in the Add/Remove Programs tool.

Note: Other checkpoints to consider when trying to remove a program:

Thanks for the FAST response.

Tried all your registry suggestions but nothing there.

As I said in my initial post I have performed a complete search of the registry looking for any mention (keys and data) of "LiveUpdate" or "Symantec" and there are no occurrences of either word.

A control panel iconic applet is a non-registry entry. It is a file with a ".cpl" extension. Do a Find or Search for lu*.cpl and delete the file.

Thanks very much for your assistance.

bcastner: the file is "s32lucp1.cpl". I could not delete it as it was locked. So I booted into "Command Line" safe mode and deleted it (good old DOS box).

Now it is gone!!!

Perhaps sticking a dagger into its heart is the best idea by renaming or deleting the .cpl program.
