My technician deleted a distribution from AD a week ago. However, if any user opens address book, he/she still see it. How can I purge it?

Check first if that entry is not in that user's personal address book!

If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, expect random guesses or no replies at all.

If you can confirm the Distribution Group/Mail-Enabled Security Group does not exist in AD, and this is actually appearing in the users Address List, my next question would be: are users viewing an Offline Address Book?

If you are using Microsoft Outlook in Exchange cached mode, then users are actually looking at the Offline Address Book which is updated nightly.

I would modify the Outlook profile (or create a new test one) so that it is online and not in cached mode. (Uncheck the Exchange Cached Mode check box in the profile properties) then open the mailbox and view the address book to confirm the deleted Distribution Group is not there.

If that is confirmed, check the Exchange server event logs to see if there are any problems reported for the Offline Address Book. Try rebuilding the Offline Address Book (in Exchange System Manager, navigate to Recipients-->Offline Address List. Right-click the Default Offline Address List in the pane on the right and select Rebuild.)

If it still shows up in the Outlook profile in exchange cached mode, try initiating a download of the Offline Address Book. To do this in Outlook select the Tools menu-->Send/Receive-->Download Address Book.

Hope that helps!

Thank you for the tips.

1. We don't use personal address book.
2. I have tried to disable the cached mode on some Outlook.
3. OWA also can see the distribution.
4. Two technicians have double-checked and make sure no the distribution listed on the AD.
5. Have tried to download the Address Book.
6. No related event errors in both DC and exchange servers.

Any other suggestions?

Check your Recipient Update Service(RUS) to make sure that it is pointing at valid DC's and Exchange Servers. Try to force an update of the RUS, or rebuild.

Also, you may want to query AD to verify that the DL that you are trying to get rid of is actually deleted, not hidden in an OU/CN you're not aware of...

I would try rebuilding the RUS as well. I tend to believe that object lives in AD somewhere.

Do you know the path of where the object did exist in AD? If so, I would try navigating to that location in ADSI edit just to make sure it's not there. (connect to your GC and connect to the domain partition. If you don' see it on the GC, try connecting to your other DC's)

To build off someone else's suggestion about searching AD, perform an advanced search so you can specify the first few letters of the group name.
