how to parse *.xls

hi,

i'm working on a reporting system including biztalk and i need to create an document specification for a *.xls document with BT-editor in order to parse it.

i've done this with several flat files but can't think of a way to do this with a excel sheet.

any ideas or has anyone done this before?
can anyone help a desperate student? ;)
