I am new to the networking stuff.

How can i check whether a particular port
is open in the system.

I want to open up 9001 port on my windows 2000 server.
HOw can i do that ?

if you have a router/firewall you need to make sure it is open.

You can make the the server itself is open, but if the router or firewall has it blocked it will not matter it the port will be closed. If there is not firewall you can check your Advanced TCP/IP options for IP filtering to ensure the port is open.

Ooopssssss........

As i am new to netoworking , let me answer your questions.

I have a small network in our office.

We have DSL cable given by our Comcast guys.

They have a router set up .

Now there is a system named "A" which acts as a
domain controller, proxy server for the internal network.

This system "A" has 2 ip address

1) static external ip address 64.0.0.0
2) internal ip address 192.168.0.0

This system "A" is hooked to the DSL router and
acts as a gateway to our office to internet.

Now how do i check whether port 9001 is open.

Do i have to call the comcast guys who has the
router set up for me to open up the port 9001 ?

or

Do is there anything from the system "A" i have
to do to open up the port?

Can you guide me as how to open up the port in
system "A" if that is where we got to do?

You can see if system "A" has port 9001 open by opening a command prompt and typing netstat -a.

You can ask comcast if they have anything that would block port 9001 on the router. If they do ask them if they could remove it.

If they have a router setup you will need to contact them to find out if they have blocked the port you need.

does the router have a web interface that you can play with?

Breakerfall
®º°¨¨°º can you ping me now...GOOD! º°¨¨°º®

When i said netstat -a it says

listening 9001

So basically that port is open .

I had called up the Comcast guys and they said that
no particular port is blocked at the router.

Now here is the thing what i was trying to do.

Example:

I have 2 systems on my network

"A"
===

With 2 ipaddress, one is external and another
is internal.
This system is the gateway/proxy/domain controller.

"B"
===
It has only 1 IP addresss which is internal.

This system has some application server
running and the application runs fine with
the internal ip address.

192.168.0.0:90 & 192.168.0.0:9001

Now i want to publish this application outside, so
that guys from outside can access this.

So i want to route thru system "A".

So if some pings to
64.0.0.0:90 it should route to 192.168.0.0:90
64.0.0.0:9001 it should route to 192.168.0.0:9001

Basically my application should work from the external
ip address.

Any ideas as what i need to do at system "A" & "B"
as far as the networking or port is concerned.

when i used netstat -a on both the machines
i get reply as "Listening to 9001 port"
