I have a rather large .xls file that I need to extract data from. Because it is so large it will either lock up Excel or if it does open after a long time, it only shows some of the information. I think it would be easier to convert the file to another format, any suggestions?

Hi,

If the data is in table formats, use MS Query...

You could import table(s) into MS access.

thanks for reply, can you please be more specific?
I haven't seen the contents of the excel spreadsheet, and i am trying to view it but excel locks up because of the xls file rather large size. i have the entire office suite, which comes with Access I presume?

As for the Access question, Access only comes with certain higher-end MS Office "packages". you may or may not have it.

FAQ is unclear to me. Not sure what I'm opening it sounds like I have to open excel file first? The problem is I cannot open this xls file because it is simply too large to begin with. Can you please clarify (for the newbie)? :)

You do this from ANY Excel workbook to get data from your gargantuan workbook.

Ah understood! I think i'll try xls converters first than try your method.

Thanks.
