Running Exchange 5.5 and Outlook 98.

When a mail comes in for UserA I want to notify UserB and UserC that a new message has arrived, without copying or forwarding the original message.

All I need is a mail with a subject "Mail has arrived for UserA".

Looking through the rules wizard there doesn't appear to be a way of doing this.
Any rule would have to be server-side as UserA is our customer support mailbox that is accessed by other people, never run in its own profile.

TIA

Pete

That option is not available.
However, there may be a way with some serverside programming, but that is a little tricky.

That is what I thought first, but Pete requested:
"without copying or forwarding the original message"

Up to you Pete

Thanks for the replies guys. The cdolive script is interesting but requires a bit too much tweaking for my liking, ATM we run a pretty standard Exchange install and I am reluctant to start adding scripts etc.

I can do the job with Mailsweeper, it's a pain to set up for this one issue, especially for something so simple (can it be done in Exch 2000?), such is life.

Thanks again

Pete

are the users on specific computers? if so you can set up the rules wizard to:

first: make a notifythem.bat file that net sends a message to the 2 other computers saying new mail has arrived in mailboxA. put in on the c:/ or c:/notify folder, or wherever you want..

then in outlook on the clientA machine:
1. open rules wizard
2. check messages when they arrive
3. when my name is in the To: line
4. start an application, notifythem.bat

this should send a net send to the other 2 users whenever a new email arrives.. the .bat would look something like..

net send computerb A new message has arrived in mailboxA
net send computerc A new message has arrived in mailboxA
net send computera messages successfully sent to computerb and computerc

pretty easy, but if they are on different computers at different times it gets more complicated.

If you tweak the script a little further a take out the computer name and enter the username of the users that need to be notified then it should not matter where the users are logged on the net send message should reach them....

eg..

net send usernameA new message has arrived in mailboxA

Nice thought but the mailbox is a support mailbox which doesn't have a logged-in user, and the Application rule is client-only and requires Outlook to be running.

Play with the permissions on the Public Folder itself. The user may have to be an owner but once figured out, just have them put a short cut for the folder on their Outlook shortcut bar. Once done, this should show them in parenthises when a new email arrives for that folder.
