How to Join the Existing Active Directory

i have a win2k server running sp2 with active directory, it is working properly. i have users being authenticated from it.

i have installed another computer with win2k running sp2 as a stand alone server.

i want to be able to log on the server with active dirctory from this new standalone server, how can i do this.

please help with details please.

Hi Miyagi, if you want your new server to be a member server just join it to the domain as normal. If you want it to be a backup domain controller ( this will share the workload of the domain controller) run DCPROMO on it. andy graham

Hi, if you don't want to promote your new server to a DC, you can install Adminpak.msi (in \winnt\system32) that will install the Active Directory snap-ins so you will be able to manage AD from your member server. You can also install it on a W2K Pro.

i want to be able to use the active directory of my domain controller from this new stand alone server (which is logging onto the same domain)

i want to install exchange server on this stand alone server but it won't install because it needs active directory.

maybe this situation will be giving you a better picture of the problem i am facing.

If the server needs AD, you have to promote it to a DC, that's the only way. (DCPROMO)

Hi Miyagi, run the active directory connector from your exchange disk, you will then be able to install exchange. Hope this helps. andy graham
