Hi Everyone,

How to install Exchange 2000 on a member server?
Can I do that or not?
I dont need to run /DomainPrep right? Since the server is not a domain controller. Do I need to do anything else?

Thanks in advance

You still need to run ForestPrep and DomainPrep, but yes, you can install Exchange on a member server.

I did run ForestPrep and DomainPrep on my domain controller.
Then I built a windows 2000 server, I jointed to the domain as a member server. But when i am trying to install exchange 2000 it gives me an error message of
- Setup is unable to access the windows 2000 active drectory.
- Failed to contact the Scema Master Server for this active directory forest.

Do I need to run the ForestPrep and DomainPrep again because the exchange server was added to the domain after I ran Forest and DomainPrep?

Thanks in advance,

I did, I created an account with permissions of
Domain Admin
Schema Admin
Enterprise Admin

Still did not work.

Thank you,

from this member server, can you run a DCDIAG? It may be helpful in finding the problem...

I ran dcdiag, It fails the connectivity. I dont really know what the problem is. I looked at the DNS and the domain is registered in DNS. Any Hint?

Thanks for your help.

Well, if it's failing connectivity, the likely culprit is DNS. What server is this member using for Primary DNS?

This is a test active directory domain controller, which is a DNS Server.

p.s. I am trying to test the exchange 5.5 to 2000 migration.

make sure the DC is pointing to itself for DNS resolution in the properties of it's NIC, and make sure there's no DNS errors in the DC's event log. Then point the member server at the same IP that the DC is using...

OK, That problem is fixed. Some how the server picked up a wrong DNS address.
But now When I want to install exchange 2000 it gives me an error message of

The component "Microsoft Excange Messaging and Collaboration Services" cannot be assigned the action "Install" because:
- Active Directory has not replicated all the necessary permissions for the deleted items container.

I remember getting this error at one point (I, too, set up our Exchange server on a member server). I don't remember what I did, but I did research on MSFT Knowledgebase...try checking this out:

Good luck. Exchange install problems can be a BIG pain to track down, but they usually revolve around permissions and DNS access (AD).

Thanks for all your help.
I went to MSFT wesite and there was article about it.
I had to do /ForestPrep and /DomainPrep on the exchange box to get it to fix.

again, Thanks for all your help.
