How to have full access to another computer in the same workgroup 3

Hi,

My home network has two XP Pro computers connected with a router. Now they can see each other and can access the shared folders very well.

Question: How to get full access of the other from one? I mean something like remote desktop or full control access where you just feel that you are actually working on the other computer to which you are connecting to.

The way I have tried is by right clicking on My Computer>Manage>Computer Management(local)>(Right Click)>Connect to Another computer. This successfully connects to the other computer but doesn't allow to do everything, saying that access denied/ you don't have permission to access

I have also checked the option in XP which says "Allow other/remote users to connect to this computer". But in select users option I do not see any user of the other computer in the network.

So how to connect to other computer in my home network so that I can control it fully from the other and vice-versa.

Personally I can't get my head round remote desktop anyway. I use Microsoft Netmeeting. Never let me down yet.

You can try using TightVNC. I use it all the time and it works great. You can get it here:

NetMeeting Question: For NetMeeting is it possible that the other computer be setup in a way that you don't have to click accept and share desktop everytime you try to connect to it??

TightVNC Question: Is it necessary that TightVNC be installed on both the machines before they can talk to each other?

A2. Yes.

You need the client installed as server/remote requester in all cases.

You can choose whether the remote client is server or client. But the software for either functions needs to be installed.

While I really like the VNC software, explore fully that the native Remote Desktop tools of XP are unable to match your needs. I use VNC where RD is not possible; the native Remote Desktop client when available.

I would like to ask two more things:-

1.) Is VNC secure enough? (so why would you prefer RD as compared to VNC as you said)

2.) My network setup is like this:- two computers (both XP Pro) connected to router which then connects to cable modem.

Here's where I need some guidance:- when I try to set-up the remote desktop connection (trying to test if I can access one computer from another through remote desktop feature) I have the following problem:- The RD setup says there are no "terminal servers" in your network.

Question: Will setting up of virtual server in my router set-up help with this issue?
