There's an old system written in FP 2.6 which I've rewritten in VFP. The source code of the old system is unavailable. I'd like to use the icon from the old system but it doesn't seem to exist as a separate entity - must have been included in the exe. This icon shows up in the desktop shortcut to the old exe, and on the screens.

Any ideas how I might be able to grab it?

If you have VC++, open the EXE (make sure you specify to open as RESOURCES). You should find an icon folder that contains the program icon.

Or you can do a <Print Screen>, paste to MS Paint (or any other image editor), clip the portion of the screen containing the icon. Paste to an icon editor (image editor included with VFP or VC++ is capable). Jon Hawkins

Jim,
It's likely any of "standard" icon extractors will work. I just tried MicroAngelo's Librarian ( and it could do it. There are many other utilities out there just do a web search on "Icon + Extractor" and you'll get lots of hits.

Thanks Rick & Jon,

I now have 2 versions of the icon, 16x16 & 32x32.

However, I can't seem to get the Project Manager to actually attach either one to the exe when I build it. No error message - it just uses the fox head. This is VFP 5.0a.

Have you checked the "Attach Icon" checkbox in "Project Info" available from the "Project" option on the menu?

Chris :)

Chris,

Yeah, I check the checkbox and then select the icon on the next screen. It just ignores my selection.
