I am able to create a report and send it automatically by email as an attachment - but what I really want to do is put the reports contents in the body of the email and not send it as an attachment. Any help would be appreciated

HOW TO GET THE TEXT FROM A REPORT TO THE BODY OF AN EMAIL

You could run the report and 'save as' an external text file then cut/paste the output into the email or do it programmatically but I'm not sure what the formatting would look like. If it is a simple report it may be OK.
