Hi, I am completely new at this so I would like some help as to how to get started with a linux server. I currently have a couple computers running on a windows xp home version, so I'm not sure how it all works. Any information/links/articles would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

First, you should select a distribution. For advice on which distribution to select, take a look at this thread: thread619-744708

Then download the distribution you want. Look here for:
From there, burn the ISOs to CDs, boot your machine from the first CD, and start the install.

Do I have to use one of the computers specifically as a linux server? How will the computers be networked if others are running on windows XP?

Thanks!

You would create linux shares with a program called samba. Samba has both a server and client daemon which will allow linux to share it's files and also allow linux to access windows shares. Samba comes with most linux distros. The best of course being Red Hat..

Oops I forgot to mention that I have XP Windows Home edition. Will Samba work on the Home edition?

Do I have to have red hat installed in every single computer in my network?

Samba shares will work to a XP Home Edition, you will not be able to join the domain though.

What does joining the domain mean? That the computers won't be networked?

Thanks!

A domain is a model. There are different types of networks but two of the most popular types are distributed (peer-to-peer) and centralized (client-server). A domain (e.g a Microsft Domain) is a client-server network.
