how to fix volume control on windows 98 1

On the task bar the icon where the speaker is it has a red mark going through it like the speaker is on mute but when I look to see if the mute is checked it is not how can I fix this. I am getting no sound at all.

If you double click the icon and open up the large record/playback panel, have a look around and see that all is as you would expect it to be.

What sound card are you using? Enter any 11-digit prime number to continue...

yes, I did try this on the volume contol and it did work.
