I am in a fix here. I have a computer at a remote location. It is not a branded computer and was custom made at home. Now I need to get it upgraded. I first want to start off with a memory upgrade.
I only have access to this machine using VNC and have no physical access.

As far as the specs of this machine are concerned, I just have the rough specs and no details.
Pentium 3
128 MB ram
40 GB HDD
and all the other good stuff

I was wondering if there is a software solution on finding out what speed of RAM is compatible with this pc ?

is it SD 66, 100, 133, 200, and 266MHz.

Is there a software solution to tell what how many free slots are there in a pc for the memory ?
how about something that tell sme the exact model of the mother board so i could go there to find out what Ram works best with it ?

what do you guys think ?

First off, with it being a P3, i would imagine the sdram would only go up to 133.
Can you get the other party at the other computer to google the free prog called "everest" and download it and run it?
That would give you all the info you need to know, especially mobo and ram info.

Still, i think you are safe with just about any sdram, especially if you get sdram with 133 mhz. If the mobo and other ram is less than 133mhz it will likely just throttle down to the speed it requires.

can you do the following remotely:
Start -> Run, type dxdiag and click OK.

See what info that gives you.

Since it is a P-III, you have either PC100 or PC133 SDRAM (not DDR).

If it's an earlier P-III (Slot version), then it requires PC100 and you'll want to pay special attention to that. Even though PC133 is backwards compatible, some are manufactured with high densities. Therefore, some older motherboards, like the slot boards, had a hard time reading newer PC133 modules. In those cases, you want to make sure that you get a double-sided DIMM (chips on both sides) which are less dense.

The newer P-III version is socket and code-named Coppermine which uses PC133.

Bajwa11,

You might want to check out Sandra 2005, I installed the "lite" - FREE version and it was able to tell me what motherboard I had, how many memory slots and what kind of memory was in each slot. If you can remotely install the "lite" version it might help!
