HOW TO DISABLE SPELL CHECK IN WORD XP

I am trying to set up a standalone workstation in a school now the computer is being set up for learning difficulties and so the children will not cheat with spellings i need to turn off the spell checker has anyone got any ideas please.

You can mark text for non-checking of spelling, Tools > Language > Set Language. This could also apply to blank paragraphs that the kids could then type on.

That's Word 2002: other versions may do it slightly differently.

Please don't use BLOCK CAPITALS, since this counts as shouting by thread conventions.

I'd also have thought that letting them use Spellcheck to fix their own errors might be as good a way as any to help them get it right.

Thanks for the notice of the capitals, see the children of such are lazy and will have a mentor with them for any assistance do you know if you can actually remove the icon from the taskbar??

Tools > Customise will let you play with icons, but spell check also works from Function Key 7. But if the document is marked not to spell-check then it will find nothing

I found a tempory solution the drop down menu beside the 100% drop down if you click on it go to add remove buttons, then standard you can choose to show or hide the option but not fully remove it thanks for your advice.

It isn't easy to stop the spell checker but you can uninstall the Proofing Tools so that there is no dictionary to look things up in. Precise actions depend om operating system but along the lines of ...

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
Select Office
Click on Change (or Add/Remove Features)
Proofing Tools are under Shared (or Common) Office Tools
