how to convert image types files... 1

Sometime ago I was able to "convert" a, say, .bmp file into a .jpeg file by just using MSPAINT. I would open a picture, then select save as... and I would just if to save the picture as a .jpg or .gif. Then I uninstalled ulead photo explorer 7 and I couldn't convert image files anymore. So I don't know if paint can really convert image files or was it because photo explorer had some filters, plug-ins or something that allowed me to convert image files. So does anyone know if I need to download something that will allow me to convert image files with msnpaint? I am using windows 98 btw. Thanks.

BeenThereDoneThat, thanks for that link. All I needed to do was to edit the registry, though I can only save files as jpg but not as .gif. I suppose I should do something similar with the gifs registry key. Thanks again.
