I am using Acess97 with a Novell environment.

Each morning, i delete and import some tables. so i enter my database exclusively (by clicking on the 'exclusive' button on the Open Dialog box).

after deleting and importing my tables, (and while i am still in exclusive mode) i compact the database. but i noticed today that users can enter the database while i am trying to compact it!

normally when i compact, Access deletes my old database and renames the new compacted database with the same name as the old database. but, because someone entered the database while i was trying to compact it, it didn't delete my old database and it named the new compacted database db1.mdb

is there a way for me to compact and make sure noone can enter during that time?

i tried opening my database by clicking on exclusive in the Open dialog box, and then, once the database opens, going to Tools, Option, Advanced and clicking on exclusive.

then i started to compact that database.
then to test it, i tried to open another version of the database. well, the computer froze and even ctrl-alt-delete didn't work. i had to cold boot!

any advice?
