Very easy......The secret to clean installs is a Windows98 Startup Disk. This magical entity will allow you to start your computer from your floppy drive and install CD drivers at the same time. Then all you do is format your C drive, and run the setup from the Windows disk.

1) Create Windows98 Startup Disk
2) Shut down Your Computer
3) Put Windows98 Startup Disk in FloppyDrive
3a) Put Windows CD in CD-ROM
4) Turn Computer On
5) At menu, Press Enter
6) At A:> prompt, type format c: /u
7) When Done, type E:>
8) Type setup
9) Follow Directions
10) Good Luck

Before you format the c: drive, make sure that you can see the cd. Sometimes the cd drivers aren't the proper fit for dos operations and they get you in trouble. And if this happens , your machine sits there until you can find the right stuff, which sometimes takes a while. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

OK the main reason I am doing this is because I cant open anything in the Control Panel and when I save a picture or download a ZIP file it saves itself as a program and when I open them they just dont do anything, and I cant use ctrl alt del, when i get froze or somthing, will, if i do the above, fix this?

thanx,

I don't know the cause of your problems, but you could first try an 'overlay' of windows. What this involves is simply re-installing windows over the top of the existing one. Normally this won't make any difference, but if a file is corrupt or missing, then this might fix it.
You do this by putting the windows disk in the drive, and opting for 'install'. It really is as simple as that. It may take half an hour or so, including a few automatic re boots.
Failing that, a format and clean install is the way to go. A bit more involved, and ensure you are absolutely sure what you're doing before you start. You will need the product code or key during install so ensure you have that, also ALL the drivers for you hardware. If you are unsure about this, let us know and we'll make it as simple as possible for you. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

need to make startup disk to restart my computer have one made but can't seem to get my computer to start after i lost all my files.what should i do

The need for a clean install or even a simple roadblock often means that it would be a good idea to closely evaluate your computer habits and of those around you. And of any peculiar situations or risk factors.

It is wise to reflect and make corrections where identifiable/addressable or you may be doing a similar exercise more than once again soon.

It may be necessary to ban children from your machine. The absence of and proper running of a virus checker and firewall can also be a serious issue to the health and proper operation of your computer.

Habits such as making (data) backups and startup disks need the additional steps of testing that they work and the making of more than one copy.

Fortunately, you can get a friend or computer shop to create a startup disk for you (using the exact same operating system).

this problem is due to a virus. it happens to many users. just get a good antivirus and scan ur system. that will do.

luv
Karthik.
