Hi All:

this is not exactly an NT question:

how do you automate creation of zip files ? we need to create about 3000 zip files every 4 months to archive files, step as follow

1. determine weather subfolders within a specific folder on the server is older than 4 month old

2. create zip files of each folder that is older than 4 months old

3. placed the all zipped files into a folder named with today month and date

4. verify that an archive is created and then finally delete the subfolders that is old than 4 months old,

5. repeat step 1-4, 4 months from now

this usually take up the whole day or two if done manually, does any one ever done a similar thing like this before ?

is there a way so the machine can do these steps during the night and not have to have a person babysit though these zip files ???

Thanks
J

Somehow you would have to create a program that can read the date of the files to start with.

From there you could either create a file with the file name in them and instruct winzip to zip the files mentioned therein or have them zipped on the spot.

The problem you face is two fold. One is to find a means of determining the age of the files and two is controlling winzip in one fell swoop.

Unless winzip has that kind of power in it, your in for a rough ride on this one.

jcck2003,

You need a (or several) clever batch file and a command prompt zip app (winzip has a command line support add-on you can download from the site). I'd suggest you post in more frequented forums (2k Pro & Server, XP) - I know there are a number of batch file wizards there! (it would take me a while........ and probably wouldn't work!)
