How to add a slave HD

Can anyone suggest a site which lists step by step how to add a second Harddrive as a slave under WinXP? This will only contain my .doc and .xls files.
Or is there a wizard in XP that guides you? I am still working my way around Win XP.

I also heard a slave drive causes an overall slowdown of performance. Is this true?

HI
Adding a secondary drive is very simple....
1. Add the harddisk as a secondary master.
a. open the computer after power down.
b. Fix the harddisk in the slot.
c. Use the cable as the one for the primary harddisk...
to this computer and the other end in the mother boards ide2 (secondary location). This will be just adjacent to the primary harddisk already stands connected.
Ensure that the red side of the ribbon cable is pointing towards 1 (similar to the earlier cable for primary hd).
Same way the cable in the harddisk side shall also be red side of the cable towards no1.
d. connect the power cable as done for power primary.

Note... if the CD drive is connected to the seconadary master, then configure the CD drive jumpers to nake that as secondary slave.
Power ON ... you must be proceeding right !

If you are using IDE hard drives you must set the dip switch or movable links to the slave position on the hard drive that is the slave and the master hard drive might need to be set to master. You could use the second ide port on the motherboard and buy another IDe cable if it is not being used.
Next reboot P.C. and get into the CMOS setup.
This is usually done by holding down the del key
You must make sure the IDE drive settings are either on AUTO
or select the option that says Auto detect IDE drives and select Y when detected.
After this you have to select exit Cmos and save.
Windows will automatically detect a second drive .

ESD hazard . Make sure you are grounded before handling hard drive as electrostatic discharge can damage the hard drive . But down touch any live voltages when grounded as it could kill you while grounded unless a 1 meg ohm resistor is in the grounding wire .

Further to the info from bdux,

Unplug the computer from the mains socket. Sit down with the new hard drive and all necessary tools at hand. Touch the computer chassis with one hand and the hard drive casing with the other.

You, the computer, and the drive are now at the same potential. As long as you don't go and walk across the carpet you are unlikely to develop a static charge that the protection devices in the chips cannot handle.

You are safe, and the chips are safe.
