Hi
My PC uses an Asus A7N8X m/board with XP2200+ cpu. At the moment I have 3 x 256mb PC2100 dimms in it, and use WIN 98SE o/s. With the nforce2 supporting dual channel memory and WIN 98 commonly having issues with more than 512mb memory (although it seems to work OK for me), am I likely to get better performance if I just use 512mb?? I always thought more was better but am not so sure in this case.
Thks for any advice - Bunger

If you go into msconfig.exe (from the RUN menu), Under the General tab, go to Advanced (button) and set the system to be limited to 512MB in Windows 98, then you should have no troubles.

Good luck!

In this case, more is better.
The benefits of dual channel are minimal at best.
Only change the amount used (or Microsofts VCACHE fix) if you have problems.
Although I use XP, in benchmarking, 768meg outperforms 512 on dual channel. The only real benefit was realized when running 1 gig (2x512) in dual channel mode.

Cheers,
Jim

Thank you both for the advice. I suppose I should be using Win XP but I tried it before and didn't like it at all. Probably one of those things that takes a bit of getting use to!
Cheers!

Just when I thought I had my problems with the A7N8X solved another one pops up! This time, I can't install the m/board drivers that come with the board. I use Win 98 SE (I know it's a bit old). When I try to install the nForce drivers the install wizard tells me to "insert the Win 98 CD into the drive specified below" but it doesn't specify any drive? So when I put it in my CD drive anyway I get a message "you have chosen not to install the nForce 2 drivers. The application will now terminate". No matter what I do or what way I try to install them this happens, even if I use the Run and Browse option in Win 98. Any ideas, without me having to resort to Win XP (not a fan of it)???

I have a PC with no floppy and I copied the the Win98 disk to my hard drive. I think all you really need is the folder with the cab files in it.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Considering the amount of bugs the original "shipped" drivers came with, it's probably wise to use Nvidia's latest 2.41 unified drivers anyway, they offer more stability and performance so forget those supplied on the disk and download the latest from Nvidia's website.
Personally I believe you'll be much better off with XP on such a new platform, then you won't even have to worry about useful memory ceiling. Martin
