Hi all,

I know the Cisco 1700 router comes with one built in ethernet port. Can the WIC port be used to add additonal ethernet ports instead of WAN ports ?

Ideally I need three separate ethernet ports.

thanks.

The 1700 supports either a 4-port Ethernet switch (part code: WIC-4ESW) or can support a 1-port Ethernet port (WIC-1ENET)

Which one you go with depends on what you're requirements are for these additional ports, i.e. do you need switched or routed ethernet connections.

Hello again !

Spoke to you just before xmass on the 'reliable static routing' feature.

I'm trying to find the cheapest Cisco router that will run 3 separate interfaces (subnets).

I'm a little concerned that running 'reliable static routing' on a single interface might cause ICMP redirect problems with the users own pc's not getting updated, so I'm trying to go for the 3 ethernet port option.

eth1 - primary comms
eth2 - secondary comms
eth3 - LAN

Yep I'd agree with that approach and would go for 3 routed ethernet ports also.

According to my Cisco price list, the WIC-1ENET RRP is 300 dollars.

Note that these are only 10mb Ethernet ports but I think that shouldn't be a problem.

Still a little confused though ! Would the WIC-1ENET only give me 1 extra ethernet port ? giving me a total of 2 ?

Yes there is only one Ethernet port per module. So to get 3 Ethernet ports, you'd need 2 modules.

Thanks again for your assistance, much appreciated.
