I now have two computers. XP BOX and a new Vista HP PC.

Can see the XP BOX in the network on the Vista PC, when I browse it asks me for user/pass for the XP BOX and I enter those and can now access files.

I am trying to copy a movie (800mb) over to the Vista machine and it takes FOREVER to calculate the time and then once it does that it takes like 40mins or more.

Is this abnormal?

How to effectively share files between these OS's?

* I do have a linksys router and netgear hub that connects them

As I recall, there is an issue regarding Vista and copying huge files. Is your Vista box up to date with all the patches and so on? From a quick web search, these two seem significant.

Windows Vista Performance Pack (KB938979): (Windows Vista Compatibility Pack (KB938194): (

according to Vista I have all the latest updates..

so the problem still exists

Okay I got to looking a bit more.

KB931770 seems to be the specific patch that addresses this one. But according to that page, you have to ask Microsoft for it. But like was said it's a common enough problem that it seems people are passing around the fix on other sites.

Can you use the cmd prompt? If you can why not run xcopy from the cmd prompt.

Seems we are getting mixed responses here and some uncertainty.

I've been out of the hardware/software loop for a while and I did not realize that Vista was still in its infancy.
