I'm supposed to recommend an OS for my group to use on our new machines. We are going to be using Websphere Studio Application Developer 4.0 and some Rational Tools. It's between Windows 2000 and XP. I've heard XP is "buggy." Is this true? Any recommendations?

How is Windows XP?

I have been using XP for about 5-6 months and I love it. It's not perfect but it's the best thing that Microsoft has come out with yet. One drawback is as someone else noted; You will have to defrag the machine more often, but this probably will not be a problem unless your users are moving around very lage files.
I have seen most of the problems that people in here are asking about, and I personally think they apply more to power users than to people who are doing repetitive tasks on a day to day basis.
Should be great for a workgroup. Connectivity is a snap.

I see from Woody Leonhard that SP1 is coming out soon. Just to let you know that he recommends that you download the whole patch rather than let Windows apply new patches over the top of myriad other patches. I use XP on my machine at work. I am extremely satsified with it. I want to put it on my home machine when I get it back up and running. I like it MUCH better than my Win Me that I have on it now.(-:
XP Home...I don't like it. It is a memory hog, I have had about thirty bailouts and a window to "send error" to MS. I have had to reinstall and fix corrupt devmgr files, etc.
But, if you are a Windows lover I think you should go with the XP Pro version and skip all of the junk in the Home version.

I don't find XP home a memory hog, never have any problems with it running slow with lots of windows open. Admittedly I don't play games. I'd buy a dedicated games machine if I wanted to do that. Perhaps that's your problem nelljack?

Learn something new every day *:->*I'm a hardcore gamer, I use my system with just about everything imaginable. As long as you keep the "junk" background programs to a minimum (messengers, firewalls, etc.) You shouldn't have a problem. I'm able to run all of my games in their full blown graphics settings and still compile code textures in the background while I'm downloading music from the net, with a firewall and anti-virus protection running.
It's mostly in how you configure your system, and of course 128 MB of ram isn't going to cut it. One other thing, XP Pro has the same exact "junk" as XP Home, the difference I saw was you get multiprocessor support and some other things that really don't justify an extra $100 unless you're a business and can afford it.
