How is the internet connection working?

I've just had a look at a small peer to peer network. 3 machines 2 Win98 and one Win95. The Win95 machine I'm told has recently been hit by a virus but I can find no sign of it. One of the 98 machines has a modem and connects in the normal dial up way. The other has no modem and the only sign I can see of any internet setting is the"Connect using LAN" box is ticked in IE however it works fine as long as the machine with the modem is online.

Prior to the virus the Win95 machine was able to connect using the LAN (or so I'm told) but now fails miserably. I can't see any settings to change or any way of testing the system.

Any Ideas??

Are you sure the LAN settings are not changed . Try configuring the internet with the IP of the machine with Modem.
Hope this help.

I can't remember details (sorry), but I know that you can use internet connection sharing on a windows 98 pc with dial up to actually create a setup disk for the client pc's... You can then take this disk to the windows 95 pc that's having connection problems, and run the program on the disk to reset the internet connection details. I guess there are no lan settings in the internet properties on the client machines because this 'setup disk' method was used... But like I said, it's been a while since i've played with internet connection sharing....

Thanks. I can confirm that this is the case. BUT why won't the Win95 machine talk? I suspect the virus but what can it have done?

winsock.dll springs to mind. Does SFC work in win95? and if so will it fix this?

I can't get at the machine for a few hours/days and when I do I'm not keen on spending hours fooling about with settings etc. (I suspect you all know the feeling)

Any ideas about the best way to procede?

AndyHo,

Make sure you can "ping" the Win98 machine that has the modem from the Win95 machine. If you can't you have a connection problem to your LAN from the Win95 pc(also try to ping the other Win98 pc). Use winipcfg to get the IP info. Also use "netstat -a" to view your connections.
I would also check your settings in network neighborhood for problems(IP@, gateway, etc).

IF you've already done this sorry for the network 101 rehashing.
