I had a T-1 installed and the Smart Jack is located in the basement of my building. I need to extent it to the 4th floor of my building. I have a standard 100pr. house cable that is available but it is Cat 3. Can I use this 100pr. Cat 3 cable to extend the T-1 from the basement Smart Jack to the 4th floor? The total run would be approx. 450 ft.

You should be ok. If you were pushing any further I would recommend a repeater but, you should be fine.

i wouldn't extend one that far but you can.. watch for bipolar violations... best bet, use the 100 pair to move the smart jack (or have it done) less trouble in the long run

Johnpoole's recommendation is on the money in my opinion. Pay the extra money up front to have your provider extend the demarc and put the smart jack wherever it is that you want it. That way, if anything up to, and including, the smart jack fails then the provider is responsible for repairs. You're just responsible for anything on your side of it.

In most cases where a customer wanted an extended demarc what I've seen most often is for the provider to drop a CAT 5E cable from the required customer location down to the building's demarc room. Bypassing the main building riser altogether.

Harry

Using the 100pr cable will work. Just remeber that you need to put the trasmit in one binder and the recieve in another. Eaxmple: trasmit on pair 1 and the recieve on pair 26.
