How do you setup second boot partion for 2000 server on a laptop 2

I have an XP pro laptop, compaq Presario 3045 US, need to load 2000 server as a second OS for dual boot. I am a consultant and many times a customer wants his or her machine to have the latest windows updates, but only has a dial up link. I want to run the SUS app for 2000 server, in a dual boot, but not loose the functionality of my xp pro install, where all of my personal stuff is.

Any ideas gents and ladies.

So, two issues:

1. How to install Win2k Server with XP already installed.

I assume you already know the preferred method is the reverse of what you want to do. Win2k server first, XP second an a different partition.

If you can clear a second partition/drive, and do not consider it otherwise, Dough Knox was brave enough to explain how to do it. I cannot give a direct link, but look under XP Tips, for the instructions to install Win2k after installing XP:

2. Using a portable computer, not always on, not always on site, seems the last description for running SUS server.

. You can run SuS under XP; you do not need Win2k Server for this;
. SUS is really not intended as you want;
. Using the batch utilities for hotfixes seems to me a better idea.

In case I forgot, the Shavlik and batch approach makes more sense than SUS in your setting.

If you become a MSDN member, the security toolkit (part of the XP Service Pack 2 planned upgrade) will handle this chore quite handily.

You can also use VMware workstation to do this,

You can create a guest operating system of Win2k on the XP host.

I use this all the time as I am also do some consulting. I have an XP host with Win98, Win2k, Win2003, RedHat AS2.1, and Redhat 9 workstation as guests. It does not use a lot of space and will work with your current NIC and Modem.

I appreciate your suggestion comtech17, but hotfix management by occasional drop by visits from consultatnts seems to me the lousiest use of SUS server I ever heard of.

The blaster virus should be enough to convicne a corporate site that there needs to be a consistent process for pusinng hotfixes and security updates to their worktations.

On August 13th of this year I had not a single client domain down. Entire state government, university sites, and large corporate sites were down due to blaster and other RPC exploits.

Your notebook suggestion does not help to prevent the problem at any of the sites you service.

Thank you to both of you bcastner especially, A lot of my clients, are small onesy twosy shops, They don't own a server, and could'nt figure out a use for one if they did. As they would see it a wasted machine sitting there doing nothing.

I am continually having to do the downloads whilst onsite, as prior to your post had not known of a way to download it to my machine, and drop it on theirs, SUS seemed the perfect opportunity.

I will follow your advice on the SUS and batch options. I am also completeing my MCSE 2000 and 2003 upgrade, and require a second 2000 server for the labs.
