Greetings,

Here is my problem, and I have been searching for it for quite a while. My company is not very large, but in the past we have had quite a few ladies get married or the visa versa, and requested that their names and email addresses be updated to reflect either past or new names acrossed all systems.

Now I have been able to cover about 99% of any instance of this previous name showing up except for in the auto-complete area of Outlook.

I have updated the user name, simple display name, Alias, and added the new email address to AD. I have also left the old email address as is, so the user could still receive email sent to the old username, but made the new one primary. However, it still shows up as "New.User <New.OldName>", whenever I type in this users name in Outlook.

Now I have drilled this down to being something to do with the LegacyExchangeDN item in the email address area of AD, but some of the instructions I have seen on this are simply to drastic to perform to simply change the name in one place.

Does anyone know an easier method to complete this task?

Your help is greatly appreciated!
Trent

So I found this, but it seems pretty involved for a simple name change.

okay...here's what i've done:

Making sure that I had good quality backups for everything...

I changed the legacyExchangeDN value for the user account using ADSI Edit tool.

/o=A Corporation/ou=A_Corporation/cn=Recipients/cn=CChesire

to

/o=A Corporation/ou=A_Corporation/cn=Recipients/cn=DLaFrench

and then I went into active directory users and groups and created a new custom address X500 with the old line

/o=A Corporation/ou=A_Corporation/cn=Recipients/cn=CChesire

This last step was to ensure that replies to old e-mails did not bounce back.

I logged out of Windows, logged back in and opened outlook. Removed the auto suggest and send a test message. Then I sent another test message and the alias was correct!

I then tested sending replies to old e-mails and they went thru as well.

Well there's a shotgun killing a fly.

Once you make the change that you ORIGINALLY tried, the Global Address List needs to be updated. That's done automatically once a day. After that, Outlook clients running in cached mode have to download the Offline Address Book. That happens automatically once a day. When both of those have happened, you'll see the update in the GAL.

Using ADSIEdit to make that change isn't the right way. Rename the account (making sure all the fields match), change the display name, add the email address, make it the default, DONE.

I agree it is a Shotgun killing a fly; However your steps that you provided have already been done on numerous occassions and that pesky Maiden names still prevails in the auto-complete even on new computers post-name change. So therein lies the true problem.

Honestly, I have not tried the above steps that I posted. That was posted on another site somewhere. We unfortunatly don't have a test server to try this out on. So I am currently setting up a test user to try this out on.

Do you have another "more simple" way to produce the same results?

Thanks for your response,
Trent

Pat did not point out one thing, you will probably need to manually rebuild the OAB. Right click OAB in Exchange System Manger and choose rebuild. Depending on the size of the organization it can take 24-48 hours to replicate down to the workstations running in Cached mode or you can force it from the workstations.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
