How do you make a console cable??

i've seen various web sites with instructions on how to make a Cisco console cable (DB9 one end and RJ45 the other end) but they all say that there are two pin 5's on the db9 - how can there be two pin 5 cables??

Probably because pin 5 need two wires connected to it. One "reference" that I found (

shows this:

DB9 pin signal RJ45 pin color *

1 DCD 8 white
2 RxD 3 black
3 TxD 1 blue
4 DTR 5 green
5 SG 2 and 6 orange and yellow

8 CTS 7 brown
9 RI none

do you have to twist cables 2 and 6 together on the rj-45 and crimp them in the same hole?

That's the way I'd try it. If you can't get them both in, then just crimp one and solder & tape the other to it.
