In an existing spreadsheet, I would like to change it so that the rows become the columns and the columns become the rows. Is there any way to do this automatically?

Yes.
All you have to do is select the rectangle of fields that you want to work on.
Press CtrlC to copy
Then left click into the cell that is to be the target for the top left cell of the result ( Make this OUTSIDE the original rectangle )
Then Right click and choose Paste Special
Then tick the transpose box.
