How can you do a step by step confirmation boot in Windows XP. I can boot into safe mode, but not normally and I'd like to see which step is holding me up but I see option for this.

Access your "help and Support menu and select use tools then select SYSTEM CONFIGURATION Utility and this will let you do a selective startup or in RUN type msconfig.

I don't think this option is available in XP. I remember it from earlier systems but have never found it in XP.

The options that you can try via Safe Mode are to load the last known good configuration. You can try System Restore. You can enable boot logging.

If you can't boot normally you can try the Recovery Console.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

Click on Tutorial then the Charlie White article on XP crash.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
