My old comp has windows 98 installed on it. When i put in the boot disc itll ask me to boot from the cd. So i put in the win98disc and it wont give me an option to delete the original partition. And if I install, it just reinstalls itself but keeps all of the original things on icons and files on it! How can i delete it?

Backup All Important Data/Docs

1. Create a Win98 boot disk. You can do this by going to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Look for the tab that creates a Win98 boot disk.
2. After creating the boot disk. Reboot your machine. As the machine reboots, make sure the Win98 boot disk is inserted in the floppy drive.
3. When the machine is finished booting, you must be in the command prompt.
4. In the command prompt type: fdisk
5. Just follow the easy instructions.

I think what you wish to accomplish will entail deleting partitions then recreating them. Remember that the partition where you will install your Operating System should be set as the active partition. Another important thing, don't forget to format your newly created partitions.

Actually, just read the faq tippy posted. Either the floppy is not first in the boot order, the disk is bad, or the floppy drive is bad. Once you have that worked out, you can run fdisk.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

The point is the 98 install CD (when booted) only has option to format a FAT32 partition created by fdisk previously, or install 98 on an existing partition.

So if you want to remove an existing partition first, you need to do that BEFORE you boot 98 install CD. Examples given are good - boot a 98 boot floppy (if you just want to reformat existing partition, format C: /q will do it quickly - much quicker than using fdisk to remove & create new partition & then formatting it - /q option is 'quick' but only works on previously formatted partition)
