I NEED A SCHEMATIC, TO CONNECT A ATX 400W POWER SUPPLY TO A AT GATEWAY CASE. WOULD LIKE TO USE EXISITING ON/OFF BUTTON OF CASE. USUALLY I BUY CASE & POWER SUPPLY TOGETHER.
THIS TIME I FOUND A FULLTOWER OLD GATEWAY THAT I HAD TO USE

HI
1. In simple terms.....
AT cases have the power switch connection to cut off or connect the power. That is it is in serial connection to the power supply route.
ATX power supply switches, just act as momentarily shorting and thus send signals thru the mother board to switch on or off.

2. SO you cannot use that power supply switch for ATX power.

3. However, if the DUAL CPU SPEED switch is available, the led cable of that can be traeated as a power switch cable for the ATX power supply. In other words, treat that switch as your power switch.

Do not connect the power supply switch to connect anywhere inside.

Another alternative is to totally disengage the power cable connection to the switch and then create the cable identical to the earlier said cable (like reset cable) and connect the switch (soder it properly) to that cable at one end. The other end needs the plastic insrt so that it can be connected to the motherboard.

Hope this helps :)

The only problem with Ramani's good suggestions is that the original on/off switch will be a locking variety, whereas ATX PSUs require momentary on/off switches. If the mains on/off switch is the conventional type, two hole fixing, locking plunger square section rod going into body, 4 1/4" spade terminals coming out the side, then it's possible to modify it for momentary operation. Carefully peal back the metal tabs on the back of the switch, and straighten the tabs underneath at the front. Now gently lift off the top metal plate and plunger mechanism. Look for a small double cranked metal rod about ½mm in diameter and just few mills long. Discard it, and reassemble switch. Hey Presto! one momentary switch...

Good luck!

I used the reset sw for the power sw on one I built, the only draw back is you don't have a reset sw then.
