How Do YOU Administer SQL Server Remotely ? 2

hi everyone,

I'm interested in learning which tools some of you use to administer your SQL Server (2000) machines and databases from home.

What's available out there in the software market and what have you actually used ?

Do you simply use Enterprise Manager over a VPN connection ?

I need to be able to monitor jobs, etc from home.

This is Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server 2000 on a Win 2000 network.

I simply VPN in and use Enterprise manager.

If I need to do anything that involves running DTS packages, or in some other way moving a lot of data, I'll use Terminal Services to my workstation at the office and use my Enterprise Manager on that machine.

We have a citrix client on the internet to login the company's network. From there I start MSTSC to take over my office machine.

I VPN into our network and then I use VNC to attach to my computer at work or to the database servers directly. I then use Enterprise Manager to monitor any jobs, etc that I have to monitor. It is as if I am at my desk at work.

In the past, I have used PC Anywhere, Remote Desktop, Tight VNC (which I hate) and Citrix to get to the servers which held the usual assortment of SQL Server tools. All of this was dependant on want my employer's clients had set up on their end.

Of all of them, I prefer Remote Desktop and PC Anywhere. Citrix can be complicated and doesn't always close its sessions when you log off. VNC doesn't always refresh the screen without "scrubbing" your mouse cursor over it (depending on the client's machine & VNC settings).

I don't need to connect to my office PC, just the SQL Servers at the office.

Looks as if installing the VPN tool on my home PC will enable me to do pretty much all I need to do.

Great, Now I can work 24 hours a day !
