How do I Split / Merge a large file?

I've been researching this for some time. I'm interested in breaking files up into smaller chunks and merging the chunks back together. I'm hoping to get some pointers on which direction to head with this. (Naturally, if someone had some ready made code, I would happily accept it) Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There are some file compress and split executables such as pkzip that can do it through command line arguments.
