when i saved a script as readInput.cgi, it saved it as readInput.cgi.txt.

Why???

If you use Notepad, you're encountering Notepad's default extension that it appends to everything unless forced to do otherwise. To force a different extension, simply put quotes around your filename in the Save window.

Hope this helps,

You're better off to use a good programming editor rather than notepad. There are a lot of free or very cheap ones available. They offer syntax coloring, brace matching, and lots of other features, depending on the editor. There are a couple of threads in this forum about editors. Tracy Dryden
