We have internal server server.domain.local but we also have a domain name tht is available on the internet, how would I make the exchange server provide mail for that address without formatting AD?

Louis Hill

Exchange uses DNS for forwarding emails to the Internet. It does not matter what internal address you have as long as you have the proper routing address and proper DNS records configured.

For DNS, look at the following article:

You need to use the recipient update service to write the SMTP addresses to all users.

That's it.

Hi!
I really like the Zen spirit in Zelandakh’s explanation!!!
I have the impression that he means this:

Right, so I will have to get my externally hosted mail to be forwarded to my server and then configure it to pick up the mail and send it. Any tips for a smooth move to it?

Louis Hill

Hey Louis,
Have your ISP create an MX record pointing at the public IP of your firewall.
Configure your firewall to deliver port 25 calls to your Exchange server.
Configure your SMTP Virtual Server on the Exchange Server.

You can do your bit first then manually send from outside to test. Use telnet <ip> 25
mail from: test@test.com
rcpt to: <any user@yourdomain.com>
DATA
subject: Test 1
This is a test
.

Should arrive fine.
Test outbound but it may get denied if you don't have RDNS.

THanks for the help, will be settings up very soon, all links and help much appriciated.
