How do I set Acrobat Reader to be default to open pdf

Works the same in Win 98. Just go to Win Explorer, highlight any PDF file. Right click, select the Reader from the list of available programs, and make sure you check 'always use this to open this type of file' (or whatever it says) in the little box near the bottom. Bingo. Double clicking on a PFD should launch Acrobat Reader.
You can use the same technique so that your computer always uses a particular program to open a particular file type.

If one of the machines that opens to a blank page is a win98 machine you can see what application is opening the pdf file with the following steps:
My Computer
View
Folder Options
File Types
Adobe Acrobat Document
(should show pdf extension)
Edit button
another Edit button
and then a box Application to perform Action
The program opening the file will be in this box.
If it is something other than acrobat, one possible solution might be to use add/remove programs, remove acrobat reader, reboot, and reinstall acrobat reader.
(& all posts assume you do have reader installed on the workstations trying to read the document.)

My intranet is on a Unix server. Most of the users just have Acrobat Reader......while some have Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat Exchange. The file on these users computers automatically open up with Acrobat Exhange when clicking on the hyperlink. When this is done, the splash screen for Acrobat Exhange shows up, then the screen just becomes blank. Although, if you try to Save the file to your computer and then open it with Acrobat Exchange, it works....This is why I would like to know if there is a way to specify within the pdf file that it is to be opened up in reader....Thanks for your help...

For grins, I looked at my system.
I'm using Acrobat 4-exchange, could not find a reader directory in program files\adobe.
I installed the 4.0 version of the reader, then went into file association step above and changed association from .exe file in acrobat subdirectory to .exe file in reader subdirectory.
When I click on a pdf on my desktop, it opens with reader vs full program. At this point have no idea if those steps created other messes I'll have to clean up.
You could probably do the same which would force workstations with exchange to open any pdf in reader (unless they opened exchange prior to opening a pdf). Don't know if that will/would solve your problem.

I have a similar problem, we have both Acrobat 5 and Acrobat Reader. I set PDF files to always open with Acrobat Reader, (by shift/right-clicking on a PDF file and clicking "open with"

I made a post in the browser forum on the chance it might be some kind of association in the browser.
The two sites below appear to be pdf related and have forums. One of you might be able to ask your question there.

I printed the document referenced,
checked to see that I had the files needed on my system,
and followed the steps for acrobat reader (4).
I then went out to the irs site, clicked on a pdf and got the box saying open/save etc. Clicking the open button opened the pdf in reader.
