I want to remove an NT4 server from my W2K network so that I can reformat it and make it into a W2K member server. I know that I could just reformat the NT4 server and load W2K server but will that leave a mess in active directory. Is there a process I can run to remove the NT4 server from active directory cleanly?

Please clarify your question. Is the NT4 server a PDC or BDC for a child domain? Or is it just a member of the Win2K domain? Is it acting as a BDC for the Win2K domain in Mixed Mode? Is it the last NT4 BDC?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

The NT4 server used to be the PDC of the domain but when we setup our Win2K domain it got demoted to a BDC. We are currently running in mixed mode and yes this is the last NT4 BDC.

OK, so in that case you will just need to turn it off and delete the bachine account for it from AD. Since it isn't running AD you won't need to worry about ad replication problems.

If you have the ADC installed you will be able to remove it and put your domain in Native Mode.

take a look here for some extra info, this article is for 2003 but the prep steps are the same for 2K.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
