I tried un-installing an old version of PC-Cillon 3.0 from a PC. The stupid PC locked down during the un-install process. After a reboot, the program was still listed. I ran un install again, and now it says that it is missing a log file and un-install will not continue. I do not have the original disc to re-install and then un-install. I've deleted the PC Cillon folder (which was empty), nothing is left in the startup. Only the listing in Add or remove is left. Does anyone know how to get this out of the listing?

Forgot to mention it running on Win98SE.

I don't have it installed on this machine, but I'm thinking jv16 power tools has an option that would help with that. I can check in the morning and post back if there are no other answers by then.

Hello Denzilla

You can safely use TweakUI to do this for you, or if you feel brave, you could edit the programme name from the registry.

The latest version of TweakUI is available from the Microsoft download site. Using REGEDIT will allow you access to the registry, whereupon you should EXPORT the current settings before hacking and chopping. Word of warning; ensure you type the application name correctly; I don't think you'll find any entries under the previous spelling of PC-cillin.

Kind regards

Phil

"I don't think you'll find any entries under the previous spelling of PC-cillin."

Yea, I guess I did have it spelled wrong ;)

I looked in the registry for PC-Cillin. I found no entries there. Don't think I saw any entires for trend micr either.

I will try the tweak UI program when I get home. I thought of another program called "regclean" but I wasn't too impressed with it. Seemed to create more problems than it cured.

On a side note, what does everyone here think of AVG antivirus? Thinking about using this instead due to it being free. I keep thinking "you get what you pay for" though.

PC-cillin is indeed the product name, but drop the hypen and see if that works. The makers of PC-cillin is Trend Micro, but search for it under...

Edit -> Find

... under regedit.exe.

You'll probably have to use Trendmicro instead, without a space.

But TweakUI is my first recommendation, it should be provided on a Win98 disc, but of course you have Win98SE. :)

Read this first...

If you still feel up to using it...

I have used it for about two years and have found it to be the best I've ever used. I update every two weeks automatically, and scan every file on a daily basis. I love the IE5 Plugin which adds a message of security to your outgoing Emails. I like to run HEURISTIC scanning to be on the safe side, and this one does that too.

In the past I have used NORTON (over complicated), MCAFEE (could never get an update on the phone no. provided), INNOCULATE (excellent when it was free) and now AVG (more than happy with it). I think this one breaks the usual rule of getting what one pays for.

Kind regards

Phil

jv16 power tools is a registry tool that has been recommended and discussed in other threads.

My version is 1.3 (also using win98se)

bring program up, click on registry tool in upper left corner. under functions, click on uninstall menu.
Hopefully you'll see your "little varmint" there. If you do,
check the box beside it and click remove at the bottom of the screen.
Hopefully that will fix your problem.

I put a link to the author's site below

you can google on jv16 for more sites/info etc.

denzilla, after post above, noticed your comment about regcleaner

I think jv16 is by the same author, as I said I learned about it from other threads here and in "hardware" section.
I'm a pretty unsophisticated user-all I can tell you is that I have been using it for about 3 months and I have used it to remove items from "installed software", "uninstall menu", and "registered file types" on win98se and have never had to come back here in a panic and ask for help because it crashed my registry.

(the caveat everyone on the site gives - is back the registry up before you tinker.) So I can't promise success, but I'd certainly think the odds are in your favor.

PowerTools from is a very nice set of tools (it also generates an undo file - so you can put entries back if necessary - when it cleans the registry).

wolluf
recommendations on how long you should keep those undo files?
thanks

Depends on the activity on your machine (installing/uninstalling apps) IMO - I have to say I've never needed to use one yet (mind you, I also don't run 98 as a serious o/s any more - my recent experience is mainly with 2k) using jv16 (but did have to on 98 using M$'s old regclean app - which was not as good as jv16).

I think problems usually come to light quickly (and as I said - I think turnover of apps matters, as if that's high it quickly becomes dangerous to run the undo, as there may be an unhappy interaction between restored and new entries).

I went with the jv16 program. It removed the entry in Add/remove and I also found 2 more reg keys. I was going to use the tweak UI, but after reading the microsoft bulletin, I was weary of it. I installed the AVG antivirus program also. Seems like a very well rounded program.

Thanks ALL!!
