How do I reinstall windows 98 without affecting any other software installed on my pc, such IE 5.5, games etc?

That is impossible unless u8 upgraded from 95... If You upgraded from 95 go to add/remove programs in control panel and go to uninstall windows 98 and click add/remove... but if u had windows 98 on the computer when u bought it, its impossible...

I heard from a friend once that it was possible, but I cant remember how he did it,

Try this
1) use 98 startup disk
2) rname c:\windows\win.com win.old
3) change to cdrom drive (e.g. d:)
4) type setup
5) select directory, choose Other directory, clik next, give c:\windows instead of c:\windows.000, clik next and you will be there. Good Luck.

Reinstalling Windows should only change default settings back. It may mean you have to reinstall IE, but that may not be needed. To do this, go to the copy of setup in the Win98 folder on your CDRom, and run it.

Why do you want to reinstall without changing anything? Doing this will not for instance straighten out any registry problems that aren't part of Windows default setup.

Paul is correct.

The first thing I would do would be go to Windows Update and get IE5.5 with Service Pack 2, then go back and get the Critical Updates. DON'T get the Critical Update Notification or the Internet Explorer Error Reporting Tool.

Another problem may be DirectX and Windows Media Player. If you've upgraded those, you'll need to download the latest versions again, as re-installing Windows downgrades these programs as well. You end up with mismatched versions of DLL's on your system if you do a re-install. After the re-install, go to Start>Run, and type vcmui. If you find backed-up versions that are newer than the present versions, replace them here.
