How do I reinstall IE on XP SP2? 1

I have the problems with OE and IE as described at and have run the utility without success. The parting comment is to reinstall Internet Explorer. I have looked at the MS KB article 281679 on the same problem, and doing the tasks listed there also did not help. I also looked at the MS KB article 318378 on reinstall or repair of IE and OE in XP, and with SP2 installed, I read it as saying to reinstall SP2, which I did with the SP2 CD. That also did not help.

How do I get the IE and or OE restored? I have also tried to use Restore Points, but all the dates I select result in the System Restore attempting to restore, but ends up with a completion message of "Restoration Incomplete" - the system cannot be restored to ...(date here).. No changes have been made to the system. There are no error log entries in the event logs that I have found.

Any suggestions appreciated..

Go to any local shop that has AOL cd or any other ISP software. Do not install to ISP just explore the cd and install IE.

You might try System Restore from Safe Mode it has been known to work from there when it fails in Normal Mode.

However, System Restore will not restore your computer to any point where the Windows configuration is faulty.

If you are having problems with Internet Explorer it is some times useful to check to see if it is a malware problem.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Question: what exactly is your problem with your IE and OE? (the Link is dead...)

to totally reregister IE (including OE) with SP2, try this line from a CMD Line (DOS Box): Iexplore.exe /rereg

@sleepsalot - your suggestion will work for SP1 not for SP2, as the IE in SP2 is at a higher version than IE6 SP1...

BigBadBen - thanks for the suggestion, I will try that in a bit. As to what is my problem?

1) When trying to open IE from an email message that includes a link, OE goes non-responsive for a long time and no IE window opens - nothing more happens.

2) When trying to click on a link from IE while displaying a web page, which should open a new window in IE, the open window in IE goes non-responsive for a long time, but no new window opens in IE.

3) When trying to logon to a webmail server, at the point where the login is entered, again IE goes non-responsive and nothing more happens until it finally times out - but the next login page is never displayed. I suspect this may be the same as #2 but can not verify it is dealing with a new window. This works on some sites, like yahoo, but not on my primary ISP site - so I don't think it a problem specifically with https sites.

As to other comments, there was virus and spyware in the system - ran AVG till clean, ran Microsoft AntiSpyware and Ad-Aware till both come up clean. Required manual registry edits to remove a toolbar "helper" - I don't remember the name and I don't have my notes handy now, but the files were in "Program Files\Toolbar". The system now runs clean with AVG, Microsoft AntiSpyware and Ad-Aware.

I will try the iexplore.exe /rereg command and if that doesn't fix it, will try the Inplace Upgrade of Windows and then re-apply all updates. I had hoped re-installing SP2 would have done the same thing, but apparently not since after reinstalling SP2, no updates were reported as being needed.

LloydSev I had run that utility without success - the utility ran without problems, but the system did not appear any different after having run it (as I had stated at the start of my first note), but thanks for the suggestion. It did copy several files from both the SP2 CD and from the original XP CD - but Microsoft Update did not find that any updates were missing after having run it.

I've fixed similar problems with the
sfc /scannow
command. It basically verifies all your system files are of a matching version and replaces them if need be.

Make sure your options in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced are correct.

Uncheck the boxes for "Install on Demand" for IE and Other programs (two boxes).

Try running temporarily with the third box "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.

"This specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off."


If that stops your errors, you will know where the trouble is.

@artheim - Well it kinda sounds like a darn WinSock, LSP, or TCP/IP problem... you may have to reset the parameters for it to work...

You may wanna check out this webpage for the TCP/IP: There you will find a utility called TCPOptimizer, and you will be able to check your current settings...

about Winsock, there are many utilities, like WinsockFix or LSP Fix ...

oh btw have you run HiJackThis already? in order to get the last pesky critters on your System, that AdAware and AntiVirus progies didn't catch?

The difference between what you are saying is "It doesn't appear anything is different". When you actually hit apply, it changes some ini files and such, so that windows xp will let you reinstall IE. It doesn't appear different, as IE will still open back up.

Do not use either WinsockFix or LSPFix on XP SP2 systems. It can be handled natively and with fewer issues by Start, Run, CMD
netsh winsock reset

In addition, for XP SP2, the only currently approved repair for IE is a reinstallation of the entire SP2 service pack.

If it is not a DLL registration issue, I would take three steps:

1. Apply this Hotfix: 2. And this Hotfix:
3. Then do every step discussed here:

Thanks to all that responded. It is now working correctly. I think the problem may have been with a partially installed (or removed) BHO - anyway after using BHODeamon I identified 3 where the files were missing, allowed the registry to be updated with BHODeamon, and now all is working again. A lot of good references were provided and I thank all of you that responded.

Just in case someone else looks at this thread... For several weeks I was experiencing an error when closing Internet Explorer (The instruction at "0x01dd....." referenced memory at "0x...". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program).

Today was "fix or buy new computer", so I came across this thread and saw the post from 'Linney' and followed his instructions. The problem went away. I then found the following site which helped me determine exactly which software was the demon:
