My company is implementing Flexitime working and is looking at a software package that allows users to clock in and out from their workstations using their NT4 Server log-on, the vendor wants IIS installed on the PDC and PC Anywhere for remote admin,
How do I install IIS on an existing NT4 Server?
Are there security issues that I need to consider?
Would it be better if we upgraded to W2K Server?
I am Sysadmin of a small LAN with NT4 server + SP6a PDC & BDC
clients have Win 98, W2K pro, no web local hosting or RAS,
internet access via proxy server and ISDN line

1. IIS 4 for NT 4.0 is installed from the NT 4 Option pack which you can download from Microsoft.

2. Yes IIS has many security issues to consider. It is important that it be installed correctly and patches stay current. Microsoft has several white papers on security and tools like IIS lock down tool to help you secure it. Because of the security concerns with IIS I would NOT recommend installing it on a Domain Controller.

3. Yes I would recommend IIS 5 (windows 2000) but if this is going on your PDC upgrading that to windows 2000 would mean you would have to upgrade the domain to active directory and that can be a larger project.

Actually for your scenario, stick with NT4 Sp6a, Option pack, Security Roll up packages.

Nt4 with the above mentioned installed is a "complete product" in Microsoft's words.

No need to buy a new fax machine if the one you have still works.
