my citrix user is connected to a shared color printer - HP deskjet 5550 series. The user is able to print black and white jobs but is unable to print in color. does anyone know why this would happen? do i need to install the driver on the server? if so how do i do that on citrix?

Thanks!
Jen

I assume you are running Citrix XP. Open the Citrix Management Console (CMC) and select printer management, right-click on drivers and select mapping. For there you can select the add option and add the needed print driver.

Good Luck.

hi john,

thanks for the reply, but i am new to this and have another question. when i map the driver a box appears asking me to type in Client driver name, so i put in the name of the printer. in the server driver box, i can't find my printer from the pull down menu. please help?

Make the name exactly as it appears on the client machine. If the driver is not on the list, you can run the HP exe that will install it on the server. Remember to change to install mode before doing the install. If you don't have it handy, the 5500 driver installer is available from the hp site below.

Good luck, hope this helps.

The easist way to install printers on a Citrix server is to install them to LPT1 then delete them.

When your user next logs onto your Citrix Server, their printer will be mapped automatically.

Cheers,
Carl.

I follow 3 steps when I add a new printer (dunno if its necessary but works for me).
Add the printer to any server.
Right-click and select compatibility and add the printer driver by selecting the drop-down list.
Then replicate to other servers in the farm.

But lets remember that its not a good idea to be adding printer drivers into the live farm without testing them first and looking for terminal services certified drivers.

I try and put on as few drivers as possible and like to remain with either standard drivers of the 2k cd or with mappings passing to the upd drivers that come with Citrix.

Good luck. From experience our farm has grown from a two server setup with drivers added willy nilly but now that we are about to hit a dozen servers its getting to be a real pain to track down those drivers that blue screen the server that have lain dormant for so long.

Since moving from NT4 to W2K/XPe I've found that very few printer drivers crash my servers.

When looking for drivers I try for "Corporate" ones off HP's web site or the driver only from other sites. These tend to work without issue!

Cheers,
Carl.

Easy way to install printer drivers.

on the server console do the following

Open printer window.
Click file and then server.
This will open a tabbed pane.
Click drivers and then add them to your hearts content.
Best advice I can give is get proper signed win2k drivers.
Do not not not not (get the hint) install all the fancy stuff that comes with them unless you absolutely have to.
