How do I highlight text in a response

Hi,
I notice from time to time that people respond to threads and parts of their responses are in red, or bold, or whatever.

I've tried all of the tricks I could think of, including writing a response in Word, highlighting, and pasting it back into the response box.

Nothing I've tried works, so could one of you gurus please tell me how to do this.

BTW, I know this is not necessarily the 'right' forum for this post, so please don't write and beat me up about that.
I'm sure others are curious about this, too, and it is about sharing the knowledge, isn't it?
