How do I get an NT4 server and a Win98 client to register in DNS automatically? At the moment I have to manually add it to DNS as a host record.

This is a Win2003 test domain.

Kind Regards

Andy

You have 2 options here:

1. Make the DNS Server do it automatically, as long as the DHCP Server is Windows 2000 or 2003 - this is a global setting on the DHCP Server and is not enabled by default.

2. Use WINS Forward Lookup. If you have WINS running (and therefore NT4.0 and Windows 9x registering their NetBIOS Names with the WINS Server) then you can point a DNS Zone to a WINS server for lookup of names not found in DNS. This is configurable on a per-zone basis.

Ok, my server uses a static IP so I take option 1 won't work?

You can also use the down and dirty lmhosts file since it's a pre w2k machine. Easy as setting up a hosts file. Good luck.
