Hey all,

I haven't purchased a regular backup program yet, and in the interim I'm trying to get the Windows 2000 Backup utility to work. BUT, after I've setup a job it'll run the first day but never again. If I go to the calendar I can see that the job is actually setup to run, it just doesn't. Any ideas on how to get it going all by itself? ALSO, can anyone recommend a good, reliable backup program? I've had good luck with Backup Exec, but where I bought it from said that it's not the best way to go with Win2k.

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

Send me an email and I will send you a step by step how to use W2k backup. Email tnguyen@nthea.com

I would recommend veritas to use as your backup. You must purchase a license for each server. There is a work around. Buy a huge hard drive, do an xcopy batch file to copy to huge hard drive, then backup that one server.

Hey trimelater - why not post the instructions here. It could be useful to a whole hoard of folk :)

hi
trimelater, i agree why dont u post it on the forum, as it would be really helpful to all.
as i also need to know how to use the windows backup. we also have the veritas backup exec, but its not working fine. so i would like to ask questions about that too.
it did full backup only once in 3 months. also can i just insert a larger capacity tape instead of 24 GB or do i need to make some changes in the device settings?
thanks

Karsh, when setting up a backup job there should be an option to use device compression. If you turn that on you should be able to almost double the capacity of the tape. Unless it's already enabled.

Thanks,

Trimelater,

Yeah, if you could post the instructions on how to schedule a backup job that would be great. I've scheduled backup jobs before, but they always worked before too. I don't see where I'm missing any of the steps, but the backup job just won't run. Anybody else have any ideas???

Thanks,

Hi all,

I have been using Veritas' Backup Exec and assorted agents on out 7 2000 servers. Veritas is difficult to initially configure to get a "Succesful" tag on the completed job.
Once you have it set up though it runs impecably day after day. I particularly like the ability to schedule jobs by combinations of specific dates, inclusions, exclusions etc..
On one of our member servers I eventually gave up on ever seeing the word "succesful" on the completed job. However if you eliminate all the issues but the open file issue then the backup set is usable and reliable, even though it is marked "Failed".

Amazingly the servers that do complete succesfully are the Oracle, SQL, Web, AD and Lotus Notes Servers. The File Server is the problem child. Veritas claims that it has to do with the 260Gb Volume and the Open File Process but I don't but it.

So I heartily recommend the Veritas products on 2000.
If you get the Veritas products I recommend that you spend the extra bucks and get the support. They have always except for my one on-going issue described above, supplied me with a quick and complete resolution.
I also support a local High School that uses the CA Product and it is not nearly as intuitive as Backup Exec.

Reason why I have not posted the step by step is because this W2k has about 30 steps. I have a documentation that show pictures which will help you with no doubts about setting w2k backup.

I have help other previous with this and they were happy with the documentation. I can post the documentation, but it will be confusing since there is no picture. I will later post this in the afternoon. Those who are still interested in having the documenation, send me an email.

If you company is on a tight budget, then I would recommend W2k backup. If not, go for veritas. I understand that veritas license must be bought for each server which is really expensive but work great

aright trimelater
i have sent u an email. I hope you would send the required info.
thanks for ur help in advance.

I agree with the Veritas users above. I use backup exec for the failsafe of my four servers. The initial installation for my servers was very well versed and ended up being a smooth installation, scheduling, and backup process. The only issue I had was with my SQL server, but to revert the problem I just checked the jobs log file and it gave me the exact error description. I went to enterprise manager and changed the backup description to 'Full' and that was it! Successfull since.

I have had intermittent issues with the file servers, security issues. These were also easily figured and fixed through the use of the backup log attached to the specific job.
